Natural Cures for Acne
Acne occurs in 2 related forms, acne vulgaris and acne rosacea.
Acne Vulgaris is a common condition of the skin mostly occurring in people between the ages of 10 and 50. It affects mostly the face, trunk, shoulders and back and is caused by an alteration in the skin's response to sex hormones. The effect of that is to produce blackheads that often develop into large unsightly pus filled spots that may produce scars on healing. This frequently causes profound psychological upset because of the appearance of the spots and scars.
Rosacea is a less common condition that predominantly affects the faces of middle aged people. There are no blackheads or whiteheads but an overall reddening of the skin is very marked. Women are more commonly affected than men but the problem is often more severe in men
Acne Treatments
Modern Western Medicine
Acne medication such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and antibiotics like as Clindamycin and Erythromycin may be applied to the skin. Antibiotics may also be taken by mouth and these include Tetracycline and Erythromycin. These have potential side effects and need to be used long term to be effective. In women Cyproterone is often helpful. Finally, Isotretinoin is used in severe refractory cases. It is known to cause foetal abnormalities and must be used in conjunction with adequate and, strict measures to prevent pregnancy.
Physical methods of skin cleaning like microdermabrasion can also be used.
