Temporary blindness in children

Does anyone have experience of a child suffering episodes of loss of vision occasionally increasing to temporary blindness? Medically the cause is uncertain, though the optic nerve could come under attack when a virus is encountered. This is very distressing for the sufferer and their family so any help or sharing of experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
