Natural Cures for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a long term condition affecting the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons) rather than the bones and joints. It usually presents as chronic pain, stiffness and aching in the muscles, mostly near joints such as the shoulders and hips. It can be difficult to differentiate from CFS although the latter is usually precipitated by a flu like illness. It may be associated with symptoms of headache, weariness and poor concentration. Many patients have disturbed sleep and others may have bowel disturbances.
It may be confused with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Fibromyalgia Treatments
Modern Western Medicine
Medical treatment is mainly supportive with the use of NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) like Meloxicam (Mobic), Naproxen (Naprosyn), Nabumetone (Relifex), Etodolac (Lodine) and Diclofenac (Voltarol), or more simple drugs as paracetamol for the pain. If the pain is severe stronger painkillers may be prescribed such as codeine and other opiates. Treatment designed to relieve the muscle spasms such as diazepam may be prescibed and if there is a very specific "trigger point" steroid injection into that point may help. Finally Low-dose tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitryptiline - can ease pain and help with disturbed sleep, as can selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine (prozac), sertraline (lustral) and citalopram (cipramil).
