Counselling and Psychotherapy
Counselling (and by extension psychotherapy) has many forms but the fundamental features are:-
- It is non judgemental.
- It does not usually involve giving directive advice.
- The therapist (counsellor) enables the problem to be seen a different light and so help the client (patient) to draw on their own resources to come to an acceptance and hopefully a solution for the problem.
The therapist and client build up a relationship of trust and this enables difficult issues to be explored in an objective and unemotional way although there may well be encouragement to express strong feelings that may have been suppressed in order to aid the healing process.
There are 4 main models of this kind of help:-
- humanistic
- cognitive
- psychodynamic
- behavioural
There are also very many subsets of these types. The differences are beyond the scope of this introduction and you will need to look into the type practiced by any chosen practitioner to decide whether their style would suit you.

Counselling and Psychotherapy Blog
Add your contributions to the blog for this page. The button is at the bottom of the page or follow this link to the blog for this page. These can be absolutely anything related to this therapy or "natural cures" that needs an answer from other members of the community, or a space for you to complain about or comment on anything related to that topic.
How to Help your Practitioner
You will have certain questions that you want to ask your practitioner about the therapy or natural cure and your practitioner will have standard questions to ask you about yourself.

Counselling and Psychotherapy Practitioner Organisations and Schools
The qualifications and requirements for a practitioner to be registered may vary markedly from organisation to organisation. We would strongly recommend that you visit the organisation's website to ensure that your chosen practitioner is registered with an organisation which has requirements with which you approve.
The home country of the organisation is listed. Although their practitioner lists and training courses are likely to be limited to their own countries most will provide more information, advice, contacts and help wherever you live:-
| Association of Professional Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists | Great Britain | National |
| British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy | Great Britain | National |
| British Psychoanalytic Council | Great Britain | National |

Please email editor(at)shared-care.com with the name and URL of your suggestions for additional organisations.
Counselling and Psychotherapy Practitioner List
As the relationship between practitioner and the person consulted by them is a very personal one we would recommend that you check out their qualifications and, if possible, decide whether you have suitable empathy with them. This listing does not imply any special competence.
