Hay Fever
Hay Fever is a condition of irritation of nose, eyes, throat and airways usually caused by an inhaled substance. The offending substance is usually a pollen but this problem may be caused by house dust mite, environmental pollutants and other inhaled substances. If it occurs seasonally it is called hay fever and is more likely to be due to pollens. Allergic rhinitis occurs at any time through out the year and may be related to food intolerances or food allergies. The symptoms include runny eyes, blocked ears, thick mucus discharge from nose, chronic irritating cough and sneezing.
Hay Fever Treatments
Modern Western Medicine
Antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine (piriton) and loratadine (claritin) are commonly used. They all have potential side effects and are often sedative.
Steroid sprays may be used. These include mometasone(nasonex), triamcinolone (nasacort) and budesonide (rhinocort). These all only suppress the condition. They do not cure it.
Newer treatment includes leukotriene receptor anatagonists such as monteleukast (singulair).
