Data Protection Policy

The information on this page relates specifically to data we collect and use for the functioning of our website and other e-resources.

What information do we collect?

We collect information on this website in the following ways:

  • For users with accounts here, we hold the forename(s), surname and email Address of each user.
  • We also hold passwords in encrypted form - we cannot see your password, and if you lose it, we can only help you reset it.
  • For any user, we provide various contact, feedback and other forms.
  • We also collect anonymous usage data to help us manage the site.

How do we use that information?

  • Account information is only used to manage the user's access to the site. In particular the email address is only used to manage the account - initial account setup information is sent by email, and the user’s registered email address is used to reset the password should that be required.
  • Information submitted by forms will be used only for the purpose for which it is provided, as described in the form itself.
  • Anonymous usage data, including demographics is used to generate website usage statistics, and only aggregate data (e.g. totals) are shared with third parties. If you wish to opt out of this please see this page

We will never voluntarily transfer your information to a third party without your permission, except for statutory and regulatory purposes.

What are Cookies?

A "cookie" is a small text file on a website user’s computer used to manage data during a web browsing session.

How do Cookies work?

As a web page is loaded, the server may offer cookies to the user's browser.

  • If the user's browser accepts the cookie, it will be saved in a text file. The information saved in the file is only accessible to the website that set it.
  • If the user's browser does not accept the cookie, this may or may not cause problems depending on the type of cookies.

On the Shared Care website and Shared Care registration portal, cookies are used to keep you logged in - you will not be able to log in if cookies are disabled.

Types of cookie, and which types we use

The following table lists the types of cookies and identifies which ones we use.

Type Comments How we use them
Session Cookies These cookies last only as long as you keep your browser open. We use session cookies to track login status.
Persistent Cookies These cookies last for a preset time. We use persistent cookies for analytics - to measure the performance of the website and traffic patterns.
Third-Party Cookies These cookies are set by a domain different from the website. They are often used by advertisers, and by social networking sites. We do not use third party cookies at all.

Cookie Audit

The following table lists each cookie used by our site, by name.

Cookie Name Type Comments
_ac Session Tracks Authentication
_utma Persistent Google Analytics
_utmb Persistent Google Analytics
_utmc Session Google Analytics
_utmz Persistent Google Analytics
cookie-policy Persistent Tracks user preference

How can I avoid being tracked by these cookies?

The simplest way to avoid being tracked by cookies is to use your web browser's "private browsing" mode. This allows cookies to be set in the normal way, and thus allows you to use the site normally, but it does not save any cookies permanently. When your browser is shut down, all cookie data from your private session is cleared.

The EU cookie legislation defines several classes of cookies:-

  • those required for the website to function (for example, cookies that track whether a user is logged in or not),
  • those which track usage for management purposes (for example, Google Analytics),
  • those which track users from site to site for advertising or social networking purposes.

Analytics cookies are not considered essential in terms of the regulations, but they are essential to manage most sites. Given the limited privacy impact of Analytics Cookies, we feel that a suitable privacy policy is more appropriate than an intrusive pop-up.
