What is Obesity?

Obesity is a major health problem costing the National Health Service many millions of pounds each year and spawning a whole raft of slimming methods to lose weight. Fat people have a higher risk of arthritis, high blood pressure and diabetes than those who are a normal weight. If your body mass index (your weight in kilogrammes divided by your height in centimetres squared) is more than 35 you are regarded as dangerously obese and at significant risk, although this measure is at best a very rough guide. That includes well over 1 in 4 of our population and it is estimated that within 15 years the problem will be the biggest health issue in the developed world.

Medication
Prescribed Diet pills include Xenical, and methylcellulose. Both have their problems and are best avoided, although Methylcellulose is a stomach filling agent and so by far the least problematic. Modern Western Medicine uses dieticians to advise on diet, diet pills, exercise and so on.
There are many others available on the internet. They are best avoided
Surgery (removal of part of the stomach, stomach stapling) is practised in some intractable cases.
