Reiki
Reiki was developed in Japan about 100 years ago. Rei-ki means "universal energy" and treatment is related to the flow of that energy around the body. In this respect the basis of the therapy is akin to that of acupuncture and yoga. That is, that in illness or injury the flow is in some way disordered and needs to be made normal. The techniques used to regularise that flow differ from discipline to discipline.
In Reiki there is a series of hand positions, either above or gently touching the body which the practitioner uses to direct the universal energy into the patient. The full teatment may take an hour or so with each position held for a few minutes. The body's healing power will ensure that the appropriate amount of energy is then channelled into the patient without any conscious effort on the part of the patient or therapist. It may be undetected or felt as some physical sensation like heat cold or tingling.

Reiki Practitioner Organisations and Schools
The qualifications and requirements for a practitioner to be registered may vary markedly from organisation to organisation. We would strongly recommend that you visit the organisation's website to ensure that your chosen practitioner is registered with an organisation which has requirements with which you approve.
The home country of the organisation is listed. Although their practitioner lists and training courses are likely to be limited to their own countries most will provide more information, advice, contacts and help wherever you live:-
| Australian Reiki Connection | Australia | National |
| The Reiki Association | Great Britain | National |
| The UK Reiki Federation | Great Britain | National |
| International Association of Reiki Professionals | United States of America | International |
Please email editor(at)shared-care.com with the name and URL of your suggestions for additional organisations.
Reiki Practitioner List
As the relationship between practitioner and the person consulted by them is a very personal one we would recommend that you check out their qualifications and, if possible, decide whether you have suitable empathy with them. This listing does not imply any special competence.
