What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis Symptoms
Psoriasis is a condition where red patches appear on the skin. These then become white and scaly. it may occur on any part of the skin including scalp and nails and can also appear in the elbow fold and armpit. It is not known what causes psoriasis but stress, infections and certain drugs can trigger it. In some cases it is an inherited disease. Psoriasis is not infectious but causes significant distress. It is quite distinct from eczema and professional help should be sought in distinguishing between these skin diseases before natural remedies are tried.
Psoriasis is associated with an inflammatory arthritis known as psoriatic arthropathy (psoriatic arthritis) and may have both allergic element and be related to stress.

Medication
Steroid creams like Betnovate and Locoid are used as are Coal Tar and Dithranol creams. These have potential side effects and while they help they do not cure the condition. In severe cases Ultraviolet light is used in hospitals. Lastly and rarely doctors will use cytotoxic drugs such as Methotrexate and these must be used under hospital supervision.
