Craniosacral Therapy

Author Information

by mike last modified 2008-10-01 13:52

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a form of healing which, through light touch, facilitates the body’s natural powers of self-healing. At the core of the craniosacral system are the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. These create subtle motions and tide-like pulsations throughout the whole body, which are sometimes called the breath of life.

When a craniosacral therapist uses his or her hands to feel the patterns of movements, he or she can become aware of what is happening in the patient’s system. This enables the practitioner to create a therapeutic relationship with the patient’s body (and their mind, which controls the body). Thus therapists can gently release tensions and restrictions from past (or current) illnesses, accidents, emotional trauma etc. Craniosacral therapy was developed from the same roots as cranial osteopathy. It does not use manipulation. Instead, it allows the patient’s body to dictate how each treatment should progress.
