What is T'ai Chi?

Around 1200 years ago, it is believed that Taoist and Buddhist monks began the practice of T'ai Chi. Used as a balance to their sitting in meditation for long periods of time, the movements helped strengthen the body and also helped the monks defend themselves against bandits.

Today T'ai Chi is practiced as a martial art and also as a moving meditation. Many doctors prescribe the slow, gentle movements of T'ai Chi for treating stress and also for recovering from illness or injuries.

One could say that T'ai Chi is a "self-help" form of physical and mental therapy. Students of T'ai Chi report that daily practice has helped lower high blood pressure, increase circulation, reduce stress, aid digestion, improve muscle flexibility, increase productivity, and enhance clarity and peace of mind.

Controlled studies of T'ai Chi show that it is helpful for improving balance in stroke survivors; exercising bones and muscles in elderly people; enhancing the treatment of knee osteoarthritis; reducing anxiety and depression; improving sleep quality; slowing bone loss; improving cardiovascular fitness; and assisting the immune system.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is one of the agencies doing a variety of T'ai Chi research studies. Other sources can be found by searching Google for "Tai Chi benefits".

One can learn T'ai Chi in a variety of ways. Traditional forms require patience, discipline and a good "movement memory". However, many easier versions are available, and one can take a class locally or do the simpler forms by watching and practicing with a DVD.

T'ai Chi Teacher Organisations and Schools

There are too many teacher organisations and schools to list - that's why I suggest one look on the Internet for local classes and teachers.

In ancient times one chose a master or teacher based on his reputation of honour and skill. We feel it best for people to find the teacher who suits their current needs, and Life has a way of leading us to the people we need to meet.
