Back Pain, Scoliosis and Sciatica

Author Information

by mike last modified 2008-01-15 23:39

Back Pain is reported to affect everyone at some point in his or her lives. It causes 110 million lost working days in Great Britain each year and is therefore a major problem. It has very many causes. If there is a trapped sciatic nerve in the back the problem is labelled sciatica, or more generally lower back pain or lumbago. However, the following features should send you to your doctor for a firm diagnosis.

  • Paralysis of any part of a leg, arm or body
  • Difficulty in passing urine or faeces.
  • Extreme tenderness of one part of the back preventing sleep.
  • Any change in an old back problem.
  • Any new and progressive back pain worsening over a few days where you haven't injured it.
  • Anything that especially worries you.

Scoliosis is a lateral (sideways) deformity of the spine which affects 4% of the population to some extent. It tends to be commoner in girls and appear around puberty. It requires sympathetic longterm treatment.

Back Pain Treatments

Modern Western Medicine

The main attack of modern medicine with mechanical back pain is to rest for only a minimum time (preferably less than 48 hours) and to take enough painkillers/anti-inflammatories to keep you mobile whilst nature does the healing. Drugs include  Meloxicam (Mobic), Naproxen (Naprosyn), Nabumetone (Relifex), Etodolac (Lodine) and Diclofenac (Voltarol) and over the counter drugs such as Ibuprofen. All of these have a risk of bleeding into the bowel and are inappropriate for many people.

Scoliosis may require splints or corrective surgery depending on severity
