Sleep Disorder
Sleep disorders come in many forms. these include:-
- Sleep apnea (sleep apnoea); where there is marked disturbance of breathing during the night, often associated with snoring. This leads to momentary waking, not usually noticeable to the patient, and loss of relaxing sleep. A consequence of this is daytime tiredness and drowsiness.
- Insomnia; principally a difficulty in getting to sleep, sometimes with early morning waking (a feature of depression
Rarer causes include narcolepsy where there are very short episodes of sleep during the day causing accidents and injuries.
Sometimes sleep disorder is a symptom of other problems; for instance, excessive wakefulness can be related to thyroid disease. A doctor should exclude any medically remediable cause before treatment.
Sleep Treatments
Modern Western Medicine
In a depressive sleep disorder tricyclic antidepressants are usually used such as Prothiaden or Nortriptyline. Difficulty getting to sleep responds to benzodiazepine drugs such as Lormetazepam and Temazepam. These all have side effects, the latter especially are addictive. They are only licenced for six weeks and should not be taken for longer than that.
The pineal gland hormone melatonin is thought to help the sleep disturbance due to jet lag.
