PMS

Author Information

by mike last modified 2008-01-15 23:39

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), also known as Premenstrual Tension (PMT) affects roughly 50% of women at some time in their reproductive life. It is thought to be due to an imbalance of sex hormones during the menstrual cycle between ovulation and the period. There seems to be a sudden retention of fluid throughout the body leading to breast tenderness, bloating and if it is in the brain, to distortion of the brain's architecture and consequent mood changes. Any problem that occurs regularly just before a period is likely to be of this nature.

PMS Treatments

Modern Western Medicine

Progesterone (a hormone) by suppository or pessary is often helpful as is the contraceptive pill or other hormonal preparation. Diuretics (water tablets) that reduce the body's fluid levels are often used with varying success. These drugs are not without side effects.
