Headache
Headache is a very common problem accounting for very many consultations with a doctor. The most common causes are tension headaches and migraine accounting for 93% of one series of patients. Other series showed that only one patient in 65 had a serious cause for their headache. However we would advocate attending your doctor for a firm diagnosis if your headache was a new symptom to you, if it was associated with other symptoms such as paralysis, muscle weakness, dislike of light or vomiting or a stiff neck; if you have a temperature or if the headache is of long standing or, finally, if the headache causes changes in the sufferer's personality.
Chronic Tension Headache is characterised by a chronic persistent headache recurring daily over months or years. It is felt like a ridged band of heaviness or weight all over the head. It does not usually wake the sufferer from sleep although it is commonly present on waking after a night's sleep. It is often is associated with tension in the neck muscles and there may be pain in the temple especially when chewing.
Headache Treatments
Modern Western Medicine
The usual drugs are tricyclic-antidepressants (such as amitriptyline) or one of the many over the counter aspirin/paracetamol/codeine and other mild analgesic mixtures or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen. It is important to note that the prolonged use of paracetamol and ibuprofen can cause headaches and so trigger a vicious cycle of headache, pill taking and further headache.
