Hypnosis

Author Information

by mike last modified 2008-04-12 19:18

Hypnotherapy is treatment in hypnosis in which practitioners believe that the critical faculties of the conscious mind are set aside allowing suggestions for cure to be more readily accepted by the subconscious mind. It may be light, medium or deep. Light trance is that which corresponds to reading a book and living its story, and when in a deep trance the patient may look as if they are sleeping. Deep or medium trance should only be used on a one to one basis with a competent practitioner.

Relaxation and Visualisation is a form of light patient alert hypnotherapy that does not use the deep or medium trances. It does not need one to one practitioner contact like mainstream hypnotherapy. It can be used in groups or with an audiotape or videotape where the degree of relaxation demanded is the same as any other use of those tapes (e.g. for entertainment or education). It involves relaxation with a series of guided images which contain suggestions for changing the way the user thinks about their problems, thus providing a new way to think about and solve them. It tends to be used in process therapies where the therapist hands the patient the tool and the patient uses that mental tool on a daily basis at home to change and alleviate their problems.

Types include "timeline" therapy, neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and brief contact therapy.
