Chinese Herbal Medicine

Author Information

by mike last modified 2008-04-12 19:17

Chinese herbal medicine is based on the concepts of Yin Yang. These make up the life essence or Qi which flows through invisible channels called meridians. When the yin (which controls one half of the body's organs) is out of balance with the yang ( controlling the other half) disease results because of the blockage to the free flow of Qi. The organs of the body are composed of five elements; fire, earth, metal, wood and water. The herbs are classified into 5 tastes, sweet, salty, bitter, pungent and sour. These correspond to the 5 elements. The treatment would involve matching the herb with the organ type. Unlike western herbal medicine some preparations include animal products. The practitioner is also likely to employ Acupuncture and some form of dietary advice.
