Hearing Problems
What are Hearing Problems?
Poor Hearing, Deafness
Deafness and poor hearing are major problems but ones which are not noticeable to the casual observer. They can however cause significant anxiety or depression for their sufferers and their carers.
Causes of Deafness and Poor Hearing
Deafness may be caused by illness such as rubella (german measles) contracted by the sufferer's mother whilst pregnant and become apparent in childhood, or in old age by a sort of wearing out arthritis of the small bones of the ear called otosclerosis. It may be accompanied by tinnitus, but this is by no means usual.
Deafness may respond to hearing aids, and its problems helped by such devices as flashing doorbells or subtitles on the television. Many sufferers learn to lipread to alleviate the difficulties.
