What are Learning Difficulties?

Learning Difficulties
Learning Difficulties (a British term) is used here to delimit those problems defined in the United States as Developmental Disability or Learning Disabilities. It is defined here A New Definition of Learning Disabilities quite recently by Hamill et al. Paraphrased it says that Learning Disabilities is a blanket term for a range of disorders that affect learning the basic skills of listening, speaking, writing, doing mathematics and reasoning. They may be present with other handicaps.
Causes of Learning Difficulties
These are often caused by genetic inherited diseases such as Downs syndrome or Fragile X - a genetic abnormality, birth trauma or maternal problems such as alcohol or drug abuse. There are many other rare diseases that can present as learning difficulties.
Other conditions that have causes that are less clear but equally problematic include ADHD and Autism
People with Learning Difficulties may have mobility difficulties and these may also need addressing. They will have carers whose needs must be considered.
